Is your last name really pronounced "Cool"?

Yes, it is! At least that's what my Dad always told me, and he would know.

Why choose "Kull Voices" -- and not "Kull Voice" -- as your business name? You only have one voice, right?

Yes, I only have one voice coming out of my mouth, and thankfully, I don't have multiple voices in my head! I chose "Kull Voices" as a business name because I would characterize my voice as versatile -- adaptable to most VO opportunities. That means I can do many types of voices, not just one. Hence, the name "Kull Voices." As long as people know how "Kull" is pronounced -- and I try to make that very clear -- then "Kull Voices" works as a business name.

Where are you based?

I am based in the greater Hartford area of Connecticut, virtually equidistant between NYC and Boston.

Where do you record and produce your VO work?

Thankfully, I can do this from the comfort of my own home. I transformed a bedroom closet into my recording studio. I have professional audio equipment, as outlined here, and can produce high-quality audio using the Audacity audio software application.

What is your branding statement?

"Confident, versatile voice out to elevate, engage, entertain, inform and inspire."

It accurately sums up my voice, the direction of my business, and my purpose for doing VO work. The last half of that statement represents how I would like people to feel when they hear my voice, no matter what job I perform.

Why did you choose to get into the voice-over business?

My bio provides many details, but overall, I was looking to re-invent myself after a long career in sports journalism. After years of people telling me I had a nice voice, I sort of stumbled into VO work and have now found this as my calling for the next chapter of my life.

What is your tagline?

"The name sounds 'Cool' ... so does the voice!"

What words would best describe your voice?

Primarily, these five -- confident, versatile, affable, engaging, motivating.

Other words that people have used to describe my voice are mature, masculine, professional, fatherly, fun, optimistic, genuine, reassuring, strong and believable. Listen to my demos and decide for yourself!

What words would best describe your personality?

There was an exercise during my voice-over training in which I had to ask the people closest to me how they would describe my personality. The top four were the following: confident, fearless, charismatic and affableOthers mentioned in no particular order: positive, encouraging, optimistic, inspiring, engaging, masculine and passionate.

What is your "vocal age"?

Mostly a middle-aged adult in his 40s and 50s, but I can also sound like someone more than 20 years younger or older.

What demographics do you appeal to?

All ages! I can do everything from senior male characters to animated characters.

How would you describe your accent?

I grew up in California, so I mostly sound like a Californian. But living in New England for the past 24 years has trained my ear to pick up the Northeast dialect. I can even affect a strong Boston or NYC accent; they are very distinct. I can also do a Southern accent, including one with a slight Texas drawl. The easiest to do is the Midwest accent because it's the most neutral among American English dialects, and I believe the California accent is the closest to that one. One foreigner from an English-speaking country now living in the U.S. once described my voice as the "all-American voice," for what that's worth.

Can you do any foreign accents?

I can do some foreign English-speaking accents (Australian, Irish, and Scottish, for instance), but maybe not well enough for a VO job ... yet. I would like to become much more proficient in those -- British as well -- in addition to affecting a Spanish, French or German accent. Learning new accents is one area where I could like to grow as a voice-over artist.

What are your strengths?

These are also a compilation of what make me unique:

  • Versatility: I have an excellent range to do several different types of voices.

  • Reliability: I will follow through on whatever is asked in a timely fashion. That's just good business.

  • Flexibility: I can adjust on the fly to accommodate the client's needs.

  • Attitude: I have a positive mindset and can get along and work with anyone.

  • Passion: I have a strong desire to perform quality work, and I am committed to being excellent at my craft.

Where are you challenged the most as a voice actor?

We all have our limitations. In addition to some of the accents I would like to learn and perfect, I can't do female voices too well, or anything with a high pitch, although I would certainly give my best effort if that's what a client wanted!

What are your passions?

All sports (but especially baseball), Christianity, writing, fitness/strength training, guitar playing, leadership, beer (especially stouts and porters), Mexican food, and -- last but certainly not least -- people!

For what specific types of VO work am I best suited?

Truthfully, all types! I can deliver high-quality VO for any genre.

Do you have a specific niche or specialty?

If I have a niche, I suppose it would be anything sports-related. People tend to gravitate to what they know best, and having a long career in sports journalism and being a lifelong athlete make me naturally comfortable in that arena, so to speak. But I would rather avoid being stereotyped as a "sports guy" because I am certainly more than capable of handling any subject matter/topic in any genre.

What is your turnaround time for VO work?

Unless it's a longer project that requires hours of recording and editing (like an audiobook), my turnaround time is within 24 hours, guaranteed.

What are your rates?

Here is my rate card.

Anything else worth mentioning?

Yes, I always have something to say, if given the opportunity! That said, reach out to me and find out what I have to offer you and your business, company, project, etc. I would be happy to have a conversation, and hopefully, it would lead to a lasting and mutually beneficial working relationship.
